Disgaea Portable - USA version - August 2007!

Woo! Disgaea Portable (for PSP) is heading for the US this summer!

Source

It's going to have PvP tacked onto it so you can send your best squad out against your friends' best squad... which is something I don't think I'll ever use! I'm quite looking forward to seeing Etna mode in English, though. And the possibility of being able to get a copy of Disgaea with English text, Japanese voices, and the full, proper, original soundtrack intact! (They haven't said anything about the soundtrack there, but I'm hoping it won't be doctored for the American audience again!)

C64 music - Richard Joseph died earlier this month

I found a cover version / remix of the Muse song "Hysteria" earlier today, so I was listening to that, and browsing C64 scene stuff, when I noticed a post on CSDB saying that Richard Joseph (composer/programmer of music for games such as Antiriad and Barbarian etc died of lung cancer on the 4th of March....

UK PS3 Launch

The Sony Playstation 3 was finally launched in the UK last Friday. I'd hardly have noticed...

News reports I noticed:

Freebies were given away at launch, in one shop in London (the huge Virgin Megastore on Oxford St) - that was a gift of a Sony 46" HD television to the first 100 customers. the cost of which totals £250000. Talk about selling consoles at a loss! It's silly. Now, if they'd put that money towards, say, lowering the price of the machine around the country, I'd be much more satisfied with that. But that's not going to happen; SCEE are all about price-fixing; that's why us Europeans are banned from importing our PS3s and PSPs from most online retailers around the world!

Microsoft also had a publicity stunt at the same event at the London opening; handing out chairs with a website address on it. The website goes to a bit of flash that says "Xbox welcomes PS3 to the next generation. Sony... you're late! Let the games begin". And that's it. A tad juvenile, and I'm sure it'll polarise the Sony fanboys against Microsoft a little more.

It's all silly, really.

PS3s were selling on ebay 3 days after launch at £100 *less* than in shops. The whole reselling-for-profit thing that happened in Japan and the US *sooooo* hasn't happened here!

Other links:

PS2/PS1 backwards compatibility list. There's a lot less compatibility in the European PS3 than in the Japanese/American versions of the console. Something to do with the PS2-emulation chips being in short supply, and relying on emulation instead. I'd like to see someone (unofficially?) take a PS3 and fully use its power as a proper PS2 emulator (and other consoles of that generation). It's a very powerful machine; it would be good to see it used for something useful...

Beautiful Katamari

There are loads of rumours flying around at the moment that there'll be a new Katamari Damacy sequel game from Bandai-Namco... it may be for xbox 360, PS3, and/or wii. It may come out in October and/or November this year. If at all.

Apparently the rumour started here on "Orange Lounge Radio". There are a few variations on it.

There are also new t-shirts from Panic and they now ship to the UK, so I might get one. (or maybe not; I mean, they're not immediately iconically Katamari... except maybe the yellow one, which is ewwwww yellow...)

Etna collectible, part 2

Etna collectible, part 1

Look what I got!

A 1/8 scale PVC figure of Etna from Makai Senki Disgaea 2 (specifically 2 - it says on the box!). I got it in a sale on CD Japan recently for 2520 yen, which is about 1/2 price...

Yes, her belt *is* removable. No, I'm not going to.

Vegeta

I bought some... erm, vegetable stock.. stuff.. today.

Mmmmm... Croatian.

Do you think they modelled the Dragon Ball GT version of Vegeta on the guy on the packet?

Both series start soon...!

weekend fun

This weekend was Mother's Day, so I went to visit my family. I messed up on the present side somewhat, giving mum some stuff I'd gotten for her from the local Chinese supermarket, which she'd asked me to fetch. And a card which I bought for 20p (but I liked that card more than the expensive ones!)

The video recorder broke, so I logged into Amazon to scout out prices. "Amazon Recommends" #1: Welcome To the NHK volume 2!

"Oh no!" I cried. T_T
"It's a conspiracy." says my brother.

XD

He played some MP3s at 33.33% too fast, which transposes it up 4 semitones, he said.

"It makes everything super happy!" I said.

So he plays the "Komm Susser Tod" PSF file from the SRW Alpha 3 soundtrack at 33% too fast... "Oh no! It sounds like a really cheerful Beatles song!" >_< "It's all wrong!"

I want to watch Cutey Honey

There's a Cutey Honey banner over at Animenation this week. Makes me want to watch some Cutey Honey. But also, I dread the thought of it... since all of Go Nagai's stuff is like a wish that's gone horribly wrong. All his works seem to be brilliant ideas... but then he messes them up by putting a ton of violence, demons, and too-perverted-to-be-sexy stuff into them.

Chulip for PS2

I'm currently playing a game called Chulip for the PS2. It's a very strange and very funny game about a boy who moves to a new town and has to kiss everyone there in order to win the heart of the girl he loves. I originally heard about it a few years ago... I read the review for it on gamefaqs and was sold. I wanted this game so much! But the game was only in Japanese! And there it stayed for many years. I bought the Japanese version, but it has too much text to play with my lack of reading skills. For years it was rumoured to be coming out in the US, but the release was endlessly put back. Then all of a sudden it was coming out on Valentine's Day this year! But... as a Gamestop/EB Games exclusive. I eventually got a copy, though, through the help of a kind American I know on a forum I frequent.

The game was made by Punchline - the same people that made Rule Of Rose, which I've played for a short while (Rule Of Rose isn't out in Europe either, but that's because 505 decided it was too controversial to sell). I decided that Rule Of Rose wasn't going to be a game I'd enjoy because I don't like the idea of letting myself be bullied in my free time. That's not fun! But Chulip is both fun and funny, from what I've seen so far. And weird!

That's the cover of the American version.

That's the cover of the Japanese version.

I like the original cover better. Seems that most people do. The new US one seems to have been made up out of a few wallpapers from the official Japanese site put together. >_<

So, uh, I'm going to go away and play this game for a bit. Byeee!

Wednesday 14 March 2007

I'm cute and I'm a controller too!

That's what it says on the box. ^_^ Just as well it's a Dragon Quest Slime PS2 joypad and not, say, a 3 year old to babysit. It came in the post today, as a birthday present from my boyfriend ^__^ (it had been on backorder).

(the batteries ran out in my camera for the last pic... no flash...)

Suzuki Bakuhatsu - Enix game - Gander robo

I just found this video of a robot called Gander, which apparently is something to do with a level in a strange bomb-diffusion Enix game called Suzuki Bakuhatsu. The song's by Mizuki Ichirou. That's what makes it interesting.

Tatsunoko Fight! (PS1 game)

Tatsunoko Fight! (PS1 game) Opening Sequence

Wow, that looks fun!! :D

Gatchaman vs Casshan vs Hurricane Polymer vs Tekkaman vs... Volter?

...looks like Volter is especialy created for this game. I wonder if he's been character designed by Amano Yoshitaka as well (since all the others were). Though... he left Tatsunoko Pro in the early 1980s and I'm not sure he'd return to that kind of anime character design again... but this is game character design, and he was still doing Final Fantasy designs... so...

It's still for sale at Play Asia! But... £26 for a PS1 game? But it says.. Sasaki Isao, Mizuki Ichirou, Horie Mitsuko! oh.... well, £26 is a bargain, then!!

Lynn Minmay sings Bomb Jack! (Mrs Pepperpot)

I remembered earlier today about the cartoon version of Mrs Pepperpot. I think I used to read the books when I was younger... there was a cartoon series too, in English, I think it was on Sky in the 1990s, sometime...

I remember that the music to either the opening or ending (I wasn't sure) was the music to the first level of the arcade game Bomb Jack, but never knew why.

Well, apparently, that cartoon version was actually an anime from 1983-1984 from Studio Pierrot, called Spoon Obaasan, and the ending theme is that Bomb Jack 1st level BGM. Both that and the opening theme are sung by Iijima Mari, who is famous for being Lynn Minmay in Macross.

I can't find the OP/ED in English... pity, since I've been wondering what the lyrics were...

NES (NSF) anime cover versions

I've placed my preorder for the Momoi Halko album I mentioned yesterday. The cover of the opening song for 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother has really impressed me! It's just so appropriate; it sounds exactly like *going on a long journey in a classic RPG* music. This isn't a novelty track; it's proper artistic genre fusion, of two of my favourite genres of music (retro anime & retro videogame). I'm in love with this whole concept.

So I went looking, and discovered .nsf file cover versions of anisong and game music. *_* Oh, I'm so in love with this!

There's an archive here - the zip file plus everything in the "incoming folder". Music players are there too, in the "software" folder.

All sorts of anime, game, and, well, every other sort of music has been covered. There's a large range of anime songs; Cutey Honey, Sailor Moon, Ryvius, Masaru-san, Bottle Fairy, Soul Taker, 2x2=Shinobuden, Pretty Cure, Blue Seed, Lost Universe, Gatekeepers, Patlabor, Great Mazinger, Slam Dunk, Slayers, Suzumiya Haruhi... It's lots of fun. ^_^

I like the cover of Masato Shimon's Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun which is merged with the Final Fantasy 1 battle theme. ^_^

And.. yeah, Momoi Halko is the most geek-friendly idol *ever*.

Momoi Halko - Famison 8-bit

The official website for Momoi Halko's upcoming album "Famison 8-bit" is now open. The site's going too slow for me to hear any of the tracks yet! Tracklisting is here!

Covers of old anisongs in 8-bit Famicom style! What an excellent concept! *_*

EDIT: Wow, this is the best thing ever! It's even got a proper cover of Hajimete no chu! I need to pre-order this...

Rose Of Versailles Mastercard

I just stumbled upon this unusual item:

http://www.orico.co.jp/merchant/verbara/index.html

(I also found this site on the anime, and the official Ikeda Riyoko site)

EDIT: And the strangest headline I've ever seen from the Mainichi, about the Berubara pachinko machine.

Anime Pachinko / Pachislot videos

Galaxy Railways <-- insane
Yamato 2 <-- loooong jackpot sequence!
Evangelion <-- CM game footage
Maison Ikkoku <-- CM
Urusei Yatsura <-- funny animations in this CM
Dirty Pair
Rose Of Versailles (poor, no sound)
Lupin III (thief!)
Kyojin no Hoshi <-- old machine, "I'll call it Baseball" >_<
Cyborg 009 (no animations or anything)
Battle Leaguer
CM for Hokuto No Ken SE (PS2) (I didn't include videos because I've already played this)
Golgo 13 <-- puuchuu
Salary-Man Kintaro

also:

Pink Lady Pachinko, I think it's the group Pink Lady, since the vocals sound like Animetal Lady. What an annoying sounding machine!

and

Ultraman <-- CM
Ultra Seven <-- CM
Ultraman Club ST Pachislot <-- CM
Godzilla Pachislot Wars <-- CM
Kamen Rider <-- *_*

I'm glad someone's played these for us, so I don't have to...

Muteki Kyojin Zambot 3

I'm currently watching the first episode of Zambot 3, now that the Shin-Getters are subbing it. The main character - Kappei - is played by Oyama Nobuyo - famous for playing Doraemon. (As well as looking like Doraemon, and being incredible at Arkanoid.) She's got a very unique voice...

BTW ANN's listing for Zambot 3 sucks. They don't have the main character in the cast, and Zambot has been written with a "sa" in katakana, which is wrong...

Since this series is a Tomino Yoshiyuki series, I'm expecting it to be a super-tragic-super-robot version of Doraemon where everybody dies. It seems quite amusing, so far.

Juspion / Daireon on youtube

More stuff I get to see that I've only heard before...

Daireon fighting, this comes from the tokusatsu series Juspion

more youtube links

Uchuu Majin Daikengo OP (or Horie Mitsuko's Live performance from SRS 2000...)

I hadn't seen the original opening before...

IT IS NOT THIS! Kore Ja Nai Robo! appropriately poor filming of the music video for this... you can faintly hear Mizuki Ichirou and Apple Pie there...

One 8 second Autobacs Advert, and another 8 second Autobacs Advert - a tiny bit more Mizuki Ichirou...

Hikaru Midorikawa's SRW-W game

Take a look at these photos from his journal showing how he's maxed out the Wing Zero...

Gunbuster

I rewatched Gunbuster this evening. Well, I've been watching it over the past week or so. It's even better than I remember! *_*

It's completely.... just so hard to conceptualise the passing of 12000 years. How much people mean to each other, and yet how brief is their existance.

I was also thinking how important it is that people live their full lives... regardless of whether you're still a part of that life...

It's also the most bizarre blatant fanservice. I mean, no anime I've ever seen before or since is so serious and yet so fanservicey, without a hint of self-awareness. Normally fanservice is accompanied by a wink to the camera to say "you were looking! I know! you ought to be ashamed!! aw I didn't mean it". And here... aside from the bath scene, it's just *service* *service* [please ignore this fanservice; it's entirely incidental; pay attention to the scene, please]

When I started rewatching, I remembered about, and was fully expecting Anno Hideaki to be doing *what he does* (but much better than recently), and I remember Hidaka Noriko as "Noriko Noriko" because of her role in Gunbuster (beyond being Akane in Ranma!), and Wakamoto Norio to be his normal intimidating-but-soooo-cool self...

I either didn't know, or I'd forgotten, that Tanaka Kouhei did the music for Gunbuster. He truly has written some of the best and most varied anime music in the past 20 years. Sakura Taisen, GaoGaiGar, G Gundam, One Piece, Violinist Of Hameln, Overman King Gainer... the catchiest theme songs... and the most dramatic orchestral works...

GGG mug!

I placed an order with YesAsia for a copy of Taiko No Tatsujin Nanadaime, and a GaoGaiGar mug. Now TnT7 is all good and well, but a GGG mug... that warrants me taking pictures. ^_^

The size, if you can't see the box clearly enough, is 78x90mm. It's a bit small. Like the mugs you get free with Easter Eggs. I'm not 100% sure of the image either. But... it's a GGG mug! *_*

Seiyuu Awards

Also... from AnimeNewsService

3-4-07 (7:32AM EST)---- 1st Seiyuu Awards Ceremony Results

The 1st ever Seiyuu Awards ceremony took place in Akihabara at the Akiba 3D Theater in the UDX building on the evening of the 3rd. Press and VIPS for the most part filled the 170 seat theater but the adjacent Tokyo Anime Center held a lottery open to the public for 200 seats who could watch via CCTV. The event honored the best anime voice actors and actresses for their performances given over fiscal year 2006. An online voting referendum started in October, 2006, with nominees being announced in February. Via deliberation of the selection committee the winners were determined. The winners walked the red carpet after the ceremony amongst cheering fans.

Those honored included:
Starring Prize: Jun Fukuyama, Romi Paku,
Subcharacter Prize: Akira Ishida, Koki Miyata, Ami Koshimizu, Yuko Goto,
Rookie Of The Year Prize: Tetsuya Kakihara, Masakazu Morita, Yui Kano, Aya Hirano,
Singing Prize: Nana Mizuki,
Personality Prize: Masumi Asano,
Special Service Prize: Kei Tomiyama,
Service Prize: Tooru Oohira, Masako Ikeda, Noriko Ohara, Mariko Mukai,
Synergy Prize: Pokemon.

My thoughts:
There's a seiyuu called "pokemon"?
Hirano Aya is still a rookie when she was in Tenshi no Shippo?

I also found the award ceremony on youtube! ^_^

Calling Paku Romi "Pak-san" makes me think she's a yellow circle that eats dots and gets chased by ghosts.

What are the "Seiyuu Awards"? I've seen awards given to seiyuu by magazines before, for example "Seiyuu Grand Prix" 1993 and "Seiyuu Grand Prix" 1994 can be viewed on youtube...

Janus/Yanusu no Kagami OP on youtube

Stuff I found recently:

Janus No Kagami TV Drama OP from 1985-1986. (Yanusu no kagami)

It features Megumi Shiina's "Konya Wa Angel" (Tonight is what it means to be young) as the theme song.

I was happy to have found this, but then I watched it, and... there's something kind of nightmarish about it. Not scary, just weird and nightmarish. It wasn't until after then that I found out it was based on a horror manga, so that makes more sense now.

First Post

I thought it's about time I started up a blog. Not 'cos I'm into the whole social-networking aspect of the 'net, not because I like the whole vanity-publishing thing, but because I forget stuff too quickly. So, yeah, this blog is my new eternal public notepad. Welcome.
