A bunch of Japanese video game music on Spotify

Spotify is now available in Japan, so I decided to explore it, and discovered that the entire Falcom game music library seems to be there under the artist name "Falcom Sound Team jdk". No kidding, there is decades of music in there, including - some albums have different versions for the different platforms each game was released on. Dozens upon dozens of albums. I scrolled for a good ten minutes and there was seemingly no end!

To follow up from my earlier post about the rare ANTHEM track "Xanadu" being available on Amazon, I notice that the same album "Falcom Classics" - containing that song - is out on Spotify. They also have "Falcom Special Box 90" which contains two later ANTHEM tracks - Holy Fighter and Protecters!

Then!

Then I went to "related artists" and discovered:

The entire 5 disc BAYONETTA soundtrack! I already have this on CD, it's amazing.

Yoko Shimomura (they mostly have Street Fighter music there, sadly hardly any Kingdom Hearts and no Mario & Luigi soundtracks)

Masafumi Takada - all Danganronpa soundtracks. =D

Capcom Sound Team - multiple Darkstalkers and Mega Man soundtracks, and also one Resident Evil soundtrack and a 1980s compilation which contains Ghosts & Goblins and so on...

SEGA - mostly modern Sonic soundtracks, but the Jet Set Radio soundtrack is also in there!

Akira Yamaoka - lots and lots of Silent Hill. Something about the title "The Best Of Silent Hill" feels really... no that's wrong you shouldn't do that!

Nobuo Uematsu - well, kind of expected him to be there with a lot of Final Fantasy, but it's actually mostly Distant Worlds versions of FF music, and the Blue Dragon soundtrack (which is also good .... apart from the cheesy battle theme)

Yasunori Mitsuda - a bunch of Chrono here and... "an cinniùint".

...

Also I know the Corona Blossom soundtrack is here on Spotify, yay, Momoi Halko!

...I'm sure there's going to be a ton more, but for now, I'm going to get back to listening to Falcom stuff while working. It's good! So good! :)

Capcom, oh Capcom...

It's funny... almost seems like a lot of Japanese companies that used to be kings of the video game world about 10 - 15 years ago have kind of imploded in recent years... destroying themselves from within.

In recent times, Capcom have:

* Implemented DRM on certain downloadable PS3 games so you need to be connected to the playstation network in order to play them, even games with no online features. See: source. This is because they don't like people "sharing" games by logging onto more than one PS3 with their account and downloading the game so it can be played on both consoles. Really didn't work out well when PSN was taken offline for several weeks.

* As far as I know, they're not going to publish any more Ace Attorney games in English. :(

* Implemented Evil DRM for the new Resident Evil spin-off game on 3DS, where you can't restart the game over from the start. Source. This is because they make no money on 2nd hand games and don't like that. So you can't ever replay the game you bought from the start. If there's any point where you mess up and want to start over and do it better you can't. If you want to go back and replay the early parts of the game with the knowledge of what you know in later stages to see how it pans out, you can't.

* Took some characters out of Marvel vs Capcom 3 that people were really looking forward to, just so they can sell DLC..... but that's turned into another version that comes out in a few months time. To make loyal fans buy the same thing twice.

* Streetfighter IV DRM

and now.... cancelled Megaman Legends 3, which I was kind of looking forward to; I liked the PS1 Megaman Legends games (and the Tron Bonne game... actually I just like Servbots!)

And they blame the fans for not creating content for the game.

There are various online campaigns running at the moment; fans begging for the game.

I'm thinking if Capcom don't want to continue the project, and the original creator has jumped ship already, it's a bad idea to force them to make it just for the money. They might just take the name of the thing you liked, put a "3" on the end, and release something heartlessly created - derivative but without the magic. And then people will spend money, but they won't like what they've bought and will complain even more.

I can't think of an appropriate equivalent in videogames at the moment. I'm thinking we'd end up with Bat out of Hell 3. But with Servbots.

Ace Attorney Apollo Justice (Nintendo DS) video game review

This is the fourth Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) game, and since the 5th one came out recently (the Miles Edgeworth game), I thought I would hurry up and play this one before tackling that!

This was the first one that doesn't have Phoenix Wright as the titular protagonist, so that is something that I know puts a lot of people off. Perhaps it put me off? I can't say. I just know I only play a new game when I feel like playing that kind of game. I really like these games, they are about the only visual novel style games that have really become mainstream in English, and the stories are usually good mysteries to play through, and the characters funny and memorable. But, I have to be in the right mood to play them.

So, Apollo Justice was a really really good game.

Apollo's special gimmick in court is... a bit ridiculous really, and staring at people to look at their sweaty armpits is not my idea of good fun, but those moments are thankfully rather few.

There was really only one investigation I could consider weak in the whole game, but it was still a lot more fun than most of the stories in the second game. All of the stories seemed logical, maybe even more than in previous games where you know what is going on and you know what you need to say but are not sure what evidence to present in the given situation.

In the end, everything tied together really well. The story is really tight, loose ends are tied up well. The only thing I had a problem with at the end was that one character's back-story didn't really fit together and seemed artificially included at the end to making a happy ending. Still, overall it was really really good.

I don't think I'll start up the Miles Edgeworth game just yet; I may well start up one of the remake Pokemon Gold/Silver games as soon as the end of next week.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney manga

I've been reading the Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright manga published by Del Rey.

If you read the blurb on the back of the books you'll think you're going to read some mystery stories, but it's actually little random / comedy stories from loads of different authors and different artists (most of whom aren't that great) - it seems like a doujin compilation.

It requires you to have read (er, played) the 3 Phoenix Wright Nintendo DS games in order to know who everyone is and get the jokes. The first volume is Phoenix Wright based, and the second is Miles Edgeworth based, but both volumes contain the full range of cast from the games; it's just a case of the focus of the story.

They are pleasant enough for a quick read and a few chuckles, but even though it looks like a lot to read with the number of pages, there's no real depth and you'll run through them; they're rather expensive for what they are (but I am still quite glad they were translated and published in English).

The Zombie Hunt in London was no good

Carrying on from my last post, hahahaha!

Apparently barely anyone turned up, and some of the miscellaneous body parts went missing (or have been stolen?)

Zombie hunt in London tomorrow

I wonder if the police will stop this... public disruption. ;)

==
If you're near London's Trafalgar Square on March 12 and find some severed body parts, you could be a winner. (As long as they're fake and zombie-like, otherwise ring the police.)

Capcom's wacky UK marketing folk have decided to hide the parts -- arms, legs, torsos and heads -- about the area as part of a Resident Evil 5 launch contest. The person who finds the most bits & pieces between 9 a.m. and 12 noon local time will win themselves a trip to Africa. In order to be considered for the prize, participants must email Capcom beforehand (info at the source link) and be willing to stand atop Westminster Bridge, wave their bounty and shout "Kijuju!" (A common sight in London, we're told.)

Sings: Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I love zombie parts...

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Tatsunoko VS Capcom ~ Cross Generation Of Heroes

There's an article on it in Famitsu magazine, both in print and online! Here's the online version of the magazine article: http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1215298_1124.html

We can see Ken from Gatchaman, Shinzo Ningen Casshan, Ryu and Chun-Li fighting, in stages that seem to be based on Yatterman and Tron Bonne. And it looks incredible!

Apparently it comes out as an arcade machine at the end of this year, then may possibly be ported to a home console. ^_^

Monster Hunter Freedom

Another game I played recently is Monster Hunter Freedom, the European version for PSP.

It's an MMORPG that you play offline. The loading times are annoying, as they seem to appear too frequently, and it's quite slow-moving, sometimes quite frustratingly. I often feel that my character is being hurt because they were too slow to break out of their current action, posing after they drink healing potions, etc. However, I found it quite addictive for the first few days that I played. I like the fight-to-the-death aspect. I like stabbing beasts to death, hacking bits off them, and cooking and eating them there and then (watch the spit turn 4 and a half times for perfect food, while excessively jolly music plays). I'd rate this game "Not suitable for vegetarians"! I like the over-exaggerated animations for eating and sleeping too, hehe. The pace got increasingly frustrating as the missions got harder, so I decided to play something else (as in, another videogame) somewhere during the two-star missions from the village chief. I get the feeling it would be much much better multiplayer, you could get some proper battle tactics in.
