Space Invaders has lyrics, at least in my head.

Oh hey, it's nearly Easter.

Fun fact: ever since I heard the song "Gesthemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar, the soundtrack to Space Invaders has had lyrics in my head, and they are : "why must I die? why must I die? why must I die? whymustIdie? whymustIdie? whymustIdie?whymustIdie?whymustIdie?whymustIdie?"

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night is a really great game

I kickstarted Koji Igarashi's new super-not-a-Castlevania game "Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night" 4 years ago and got my copy last Tuesday. Played it *a lot*.

It really is a great game. I think it's possibly better than a IGA-era Castlevania game because there are so many weapons to use, leading to so many play-styles, and I do like variety. Other than that - same basics you would expect from an "Igavania". 2D platformer, explore a huge castle, fight some bosses, collect enemy drops and skills, use new skills to explore further... and yes there is a "backstep" button. :)

The story of the game is alchemy / anti-church / experimenting on children / post-apocalypse (hmm, that makes it sound like Bat Out Of Hell 2100. It's not anything like Bat 2100!), but you can happily ignore that if you like. There are both English and Japanese voice options. I played in Japanese (honestly I don't think the English dub for Symphony Of The Night is worth celebrating, I know it became a camp cult hit for its awfulness but I have no attachment to it).

You can also change the colour of blood in the options. I like that you can do that, and I turned blood purple. There are lots of little Easter Eggs too. And cool weird things like... enemies that look like giant heads of people's pets (I think this was a kickstarter reward!)

The only thing I didn't think was great in the design of the game was that with the art they used in the game (which is beautiful); sometimes it was hard to see what's foreground and background, but I got used to it after a few hours of playing.

I started the game pretty much as soon as I could, so I started playing on version 1.01 and a few hours later they released version 1.02, but I read that it messed up the save file so I decided to finish the game as soon as possible and not update until I was done. Well, I don't know if that was the best idea, because version 1.01 was patched because a few of the last boss fights in the game didn't show up on the in-game bestiary list.

So I updated the game with patch 1.02 and started a New Game+ and completed the entire game again. There were a few things changed with the patch. I think poison was nerfed, I beat a lot of the bosses first time round using poison and keeping my distance, but that seemed less potent in version 1.02. Also I thought the secret boss fight with the vampire librarian was much harder in version 1.02.

I got the platinum trophy on PSN for completing every trophy on Sunday night after 5 days and 5 hours of intense gaming (the time taken is logged on psnprofiles). I think it was a really great game.  It's updated to version 1.03 now so everything I said specific to patches is probably irrelevant now too, haha.

I didn't fight IGA because his secret boss fight (not very secret) wasn't patched in to the PS4 version yet. I'll have to return at some point!

Conclusion: well worth waiting 4 years for this game, even though I finished the whole thing twice within 5 days!

This year's Steam Awards nominations

This is how I voted. If it were possible, I would have voted POLYBIUS on PS4 for the "Mom's Spaghetti" award, because it's the only game this year to really fit the description of having a really intense subconscious physical reaction to a game. But, these are Steam awards. So I nominated Scoregasm since, well, that's a physical reaction too, right? Hahaha.

Notes on "A dragon girl looks up at the endless sky"

This post is to supplement a curation I made on Steam's J-Indie Arcade group.

1) I didn't know what genre to call it so I called it "hybrid action RPG". It seems to be like two different kinds of action RPG though - dungeon room type stuff (e.g. like Recettear) and also 2D hack-and-slash type (e.g. like Odin Sphere)

2) The developers are Debonosu - I assume they still count as indie... well, I had a look at their site http://www.debonosu.jp/ and there's a banner flashing past mentioning Comiket 90, so I am guessing they are still on the circuit. According to https://vndb.org/p709 they have an imprint for another game.

3) According to VNDB: https://vndb.org/v3988/releases
The original version of this game was 18+ and was released on PC in 2010. The PSP version is 17+ and was released in 2013, and included additional characters and scenes. So this is based on the PSP version.

4) Their other game on Steam - Kagura Douchuuki - was originally an 18+ game (all about raping miko - I am not going to post details but if you want, you can read about it here), but when it came out on Steam, they'd removed all that and it became a 12+ version. So there is no knowing whether anything further has been censored in the game's transformation from "Sora o Aogite Kumo Takaku" (17+ PSP version) to "A dragon girl looks up at the endless sky". Possibly nothing? Possibly much?

Sluggish Morss

Yesterday afternoon, and this morning, I played through two games in a series of indie games - "Sluggish Morss: A Delicate Time In History" and "Sluggish Morss: ɯnʇıuıɟuı p∀" (which are actually the second and third Sluggish Morss games).

Then afterwards, I found the games on Gamejolt: http://gamejolt.com/@jackspinoza/games (huh, Ad Infinitum is free there... I already paid for it on itch.io.... oh well, it was just £1, I don't mind...), and then I found the first game - Sluggish Morss, and played through that too.

It's a series of very strange games. Games? Experiences. Let's call them experiences, that almost tell a story.

I felt that the first Sluggish Morss game - the one I played last - was pretty worthless, compared to the other two. It just seemed like... the only thing the creators really want to express is that they like things that look weird, and like to smoke a lot of pot. To me, it didn't feel like it has a lot of depth or insight. But... well, everything has to start somewhere. Maybe I wouldn't feel this way if I had played the games in chronological order.

So, onto "A Delicate Time In History", which was the first one I played. At first, it struck me that the game wasn't very good. It seemed enormously unpolished, and at first, there didn't seem much to latch onto - there was so much that was unfamiliar, but after a while I started to get it. It uses a lot of low-resolution digitised photography and synthesised voices, and human voices altered to sound synthetic.

The third game, "Sluggish Morss: ɯnʇıuıɟuı p∀", kept crashing, the first few times I played it - but that turned out ok, because as a little Easter egg, you get a different quote or image every time you start up the game, and I wouldn't have known otherwise. (I just closed lots of applications and it started working ok, no crashes). This one is much more polished and the artwork is much better, using a combination of glitchy pixel art and claymation. It seemed much shorter than "A Delicate Time In History".

Overall, I felt that although "A Delicate Time In History" wasn't as "good" in terms of game / art quality, it had more impact overall, mainly through its dialogue and songs.

It's all very experimental and exploratory. I especially enjoyed the philosophical musings on the subject of just how meaningless a person's life is in terms of space and time, demonstrated by making the people on board the Sluggish Morss travel at FTL speeds, which makes them forward-only time travellers. How even what we normally think of as immortality would be meaningless on the scale of stars exploding and galaxies imploding.

I feel like "A Delicate Time In History" was definitely worth the time invested in playing through it, and "ɯnʇıuıɟuı p∀" was a feast for the eyes. Interesting stuff. If you're ever feeling like your gaming palate has become too samey and are seeking a "different" experience in gaming, take a look at this, bringing along an open mind.
